Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue in Addressing Community-based Water Management Problems in Bangkajao Greenspace

The Bangkrajao Green Space is an extensive green area enveloped by the meandering Chao Phraya River and bordered by urbanized development in both Bangkok metropolis as well as neighboring Samut Prakarn province and has been recognized as a prime “lung” for the surrounding cityscape. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) of Thailand has declared Bangkrajao as a protected area for conservation purposes and is currently drafting a framework plan with the objective of preserving and rehabilitating the natural resources and environment therein.

One of the long-standing problems of Bangkrajao has to do with the management of water resources which has over time increased in severity and one notable sign is the decrease in the amount of green cover. The International Research Associate for Happy Societies (IRAH) which has the aim of building happy societies with good quality of life has conducted research in the Bangkrajao area with this purpose in mind since 2017. It has recently received a small grant through the Stockholm Environment Institute Asia Center (SEI Asia) administered program entitled Sustainable Mekong Research Network for All (SUMERNET 4 All) which is supported by the Government of Sweden through the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) for a project entitled Multi-stakeholder Dialogue in Addressing Community-based Water Management Problems in Bangkrajao Greenspace for about six month period from late 2022-mid 2023. Some activities and output/ outcomes can be seen in attached links.
